Fall GIS and Map Workshops

Google Earth and Google Maps

Woodruff Library Room 314

1:45 a.m. – 12:35 p.m. Friday, November 7th, 2008

This workshop provides an introduction to the different types of virtual globes and online map applications that are available and explores how they can be used in research and instruction. Although the primary focus will be on Google Earth and Google Maps the workshop will also demonstrate other applications available.

Understanding Geographic Information Systems

Woodruff Library Room 314

11:45 a.m. – 12:35 p.m. Friday, November, 14th, 2008

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a collection of computer hardware, software, and geographic data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. Learn more about this technology and how it can be used for research and projects in the business, humanities, and the health, natural, or social sciences.

Working with Digital Topographic Maps

Woodruff Library Room 314

11:45 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. Friday, October 24th, 2008

Many paper topographic maps are now available in a new digital format known as GeoPDF. This workshop explains how to find and download maps, how to read topographic maps, and how to make use of the special functionality associated with a GeoPDF.

Locating Maps and Geospatial Data

Woodruff Library Room 314

11:45 a.m. – 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Get tips on finding maps and geospatial data and learn about new and important changes in spatial data infrastructures. Techniques on how to convert analog source data to digital will also be covered.

[NEW!] Working with the Global Positioning System (GPS)

Woodruff Library Room 314

5:00 p.m. – 5:50 p.m. Friday, September 26th, 2008

A “hands on” workshop that covers the fundamentals of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and how it can be used in research. Workshop will begin in the classroom and then we will move outdoors to capture data. *Please note the workshop will officially end at 5:50 but participants will have the option to continue data collection beyond that time.

EDC hours

The Electronic Data Center will be closed from Tuesday, August 5th through Monday, August 11th.  We will re-open for business at 9:00AM on Tuesday, August 12.

Map Design Workshop

There is still space available for the workshop on …

Map Design

Woodruff Library Room 312

Learn mapping techniques and how to apply cartographic conventions to improve the quality of your maps. This workshop will focus on the concepts, tools, and tips needed to improve your map’s balance, readability, and visual impact including working with fonts and labeling, color, visual hierarchies, and more. Experience in mapping is not required. To sign up, contact Michael Page at michael.page@emory.edu or 404.727.2348.

New features in GeoPDF Toolbar

topostrip.jpg

The free GeoPDF toolbar (for Adobe Acrobat Reader) from TerraGo now has new functionality that includes the ability to import shp, kml, and gpx and export shp and kml files. GeoPDF offers a good solution to share dynamic maps and geospatial information without your users need a full GIS application. It is also useful for digital collection in the field. Particularly useful is the digital collection of over 55,000 USGS topographic maps that are GeoPDF enabled. From the USGS Store you can order a paper copy or download a digital GeoPDF enabled map for free. If you need to make your own map the map authoring environment (Map2PDF) is available for use at the Electronic Data Center for current Emory faculty, staff, and students.

Geographic Calculator Version 7 available at the EDC

calc.jpg

The latest version of the Geographic Calculator is now available for use at the EDC (faculty, staff, and students only). With the calculator you convert individual coordinates, point databases, and map files from one coordinate system, datum, and map projection to another. With version 7 there is an extension for working within ArcGIS. For a full explanation of functionality visit the Blue Marble Geographics website.
