GeoPDFs Extend the Capability of Digital Maps

The Electronic Data Center recently acquired a license to TerraGo Technologies Map2PDF. Map2PDF is a authoring application to create digital maps in GeoPDF. GeoPDF is a proprietary extension to the Adobe PDF file format. The extension transforms PDF coordinates to a projected Cartesian coordinate system and allows other advanced PDF features such as layers and object data. A GeoPDF enabled digital map can be viewed and annotated using Adobe Acrobat Reader and the GeoPDF Toolbar plug-in (both are free downloads).

1954 topographic sheet from the library’s collection

While Woodruff Library maintains an extensive collection of printed USGS Topographic Maps, the USGS has recently upgraded their online store to improve the searching of USGS topographic maps with the extended functionality of the GeoPDF format. Simply search the Google Map API within the USGS Store’s – Map Locator & Downloader, select a point on the map, double-click the icon and download your map. With the GeoPDF Toolbar you can view maps with multiple coordinate displays, measure length and area, turn layers on and off, and search map attributes. If the map is reader enabled you add can notes, redlines, markups, images or other data from multiple sources. Access to the authoring environment is available at the EDC to Emory faculty, staff, and students. Please note that the application is restricted for specific educational purposes only.

The Electronic Data Center supports quantitative and spatial research at Emory University.
