New features in GeoPDF Toolbar

topostrip.jpg

The free GeoPDF toolbar (for Adobe Acrobat Reader) from TerraGo now has new functionality that includes the ability to import shp, kml, and gpx and export shp and kml files. GeoPDF offers a good solution to share dynamic maps and geospatial information without your users need a full GIS application. It is also useful for digital collection in the field. Particularly useful is the digital collection of over 55,000 USGS topographic maps that are GeoPDF enabled. From the USGS Store you can order a paper copy or download a digital GeoPDF enabled map for free. If you need to make your own map the map authoring environment (Map2PDF) is available for use at the Electronic Data Center for current Emory faculty, staff, and students.

Geographic Calculator Version 7 available at the EDC

The latest version of the Geographic Calculator is now available for use at the EDC (faculty, staff, and students only). With the calculator you convert individual coordinates, point databases, and map files from one coordinate system, datum, and map projection to another. With version 7 there is an extension for working within ArcGIS. For a full explanation of functionality visit the Blue Marble Geographics website.

Digital Sanborn Maps of Georgia Now Available to Emory Library Patrons

Digital Sanborn Maps (1867-1970) is a collection of large-scale landbook maps which includes information such as the outline of each building, the size and shape and construction materials, heights, and function of structures, location of windows and doors. The maps also give street names, street and sidewalk widths, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. Textual information includes construction details, ownership and building use. Summary: Includes most of the fire insurance maps of Georgia produced by the Sanborn Map Company from the mid-1880s to around 1950. The black and white digital images were produced from microform of the Sanborn maps in the Library of Congress collection. Digital collection is searchable by city and date.

New Datasets at the Roper Center

Roper Center Archives Update, October 2007

The Roper Center had added several new datasets into its archive of survey data. The additions include surveys taken in the weeks before or after the 2006 Congressional elections; a Public Agenda Foundation poll on rudeness in America (plenty to work with there, no doubt); a survey on U.S. international leadership; and a survey on attitudes towards Muslims in the United States.

There are also additions from surveys taken amongst particular populations, such as Hurricane Katrina survivors; registered voters in Iowa who were asked about the upcoming Iowa caucuses; “Generation Next;” the working poor and unemployed; and laid-off workers.

Current and past announcements of updates/additions to Roper’s archives are available at

http://www.ropercenter.uconn.edu/data_access/data/past_data_announcements.html

And, Roper’s Survey Spotlights also highlight new additions to Roper’s holdings.

Today’s “Roper has data on that?” dataset: a survey from 1943/1944 of people who listened to a WWII-era Kate Smith war bond drive.

Latest ICPSR Updates and Additions

The ICPSR’s holdings continue to expand. Amongst other studies, the archive has added or updated the following over the past month:

As always, you can view the full list of ICPSR additions and updates at this location:
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/ICPSR/access/recent.html.

Today’s “I didn’t know the ICPSR had those data” study: Gallup International’s 2005 Voice of the People survey, with data from 67 countries on topics such as approval/disapproval of international and domestic political institutions, attitudes towards crime, and respondents’ beliefs about what constitute the most important topics confronting the world today.

Searchable Digital Notebooks for Research

There is still limited space available for the workshop this week on searchable digital notebooks. Learn how to create and maintain a searchable digital notebook that can be used for taking notes on a particular subject or for project documentation and reference. The workshop will be held on Friday, November 2nd from 12:50 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. in Woodruff Library Room 312. To sign up, contact Michael Page at michael.page@emory.edu or 404.727.2348.
